To Apline and Moab - Racing the Storm

We left from Phoenix Thursday morning. Our plan was to take the scenic route and get to Moab on Friday. We went East through Globe (yummy lunch!) and then onto 191 to stay in the little town of Alpine. This is a particularly pretty ride, and gets very twisty from Clifton to Alpine. Also, the elevation really rises, and by the time we got to Alpine, we had gone from mesh jackets when we left Phoenix in the morning to full pants and winter jackets with liners. This area is "free range," so we passed a few large cows in the middle of the highway! There was even some patches of snow left on the ground (not on the road) and Crozb really perked up when we got to that section. We saw several large groups of elk, who were completely unafraid of us. Just glad we saw them in the valley next to the road, not IN the road. We found our hotel, then were told we had better get to the only restaurant in town that was still open, as it was going to close in half an hour! We had good old fashioned greasy spoon dinner (I had a bacon cheeseburger and Dave had a patty melt) and it was delicious! The added bonus was that they had homemade pies, which we could not pass up. Yum Yum Yum!!! In the morning we headed out again and met up with some serious wind. Yuck. It could have been worse. I was feeling it, but Dave certainly had it worse off, being only 2 wheels and all ; ) We were really glad it wasn't raining, as it was threatening for about the last three hours of the ride. Again, this was a "free range" area, as well as passing through Reservation land, so we not only saw cows eating the grass in the parking lot of the high school (never seen that before, and I be we never will again!) but also goats and many dogs. The dogs were interesting to us, as they all were very friendly, and had a general look of scruffiness to them. Crozb sure looked like a city slicker dog next to them, with his decidedly unfluffy hair, his fancy harness and red winter jacket on! When we got just to the outskirts of Moab, we pulled off to call Bill & Lori to see how close they were to town. They litterally passed us on the highway as we were speaking on the phone! So, we got to the hotel, got checked in, decided on dinner and off we went to get an education on the ins and outs of drinking anything with alcohol in it in the state of Utah! Saturday morning it was still overcast, so we hopped into Bill & Lori's Jeep and decided to do the tourist thing. Went to a few shops, bought some maps to plot our riding with, and then headed to Arches National Park. We only got a little bit into the park before it started sprinkling, then raining, and we gave up, since you couldn't see anything ; ( You can see from the photos, that main street was just about flooded. It was really truly raining... We headed to the liquor store, then back to chill out, b.s. a bit and wait to join up with some other folks we knew would be in town by Saturday evening. That night we ate at Eddie McStiffs, where the food was actually pretty good! The company was better ; )
